My Faith
Journey
by Shane Calvillo,
Assistant Director of Student Ministries
For almost a year
now, I have been exploring the concept of faith. Last summer I lived in
Boulder. I had one bowl, one spoon, one butter knife, and a hammer I
would frequently use as a can opener. I had a Bachelor's degree in one
hand and my future in the other - a hand held open to God. On any given
day, I would wake up and begin reading; then I might work out or go for
a run. The rest of the day, I would spend hiking the flatirons of
Boulder or sitting by a lake. In the beauty of God's creation, I wrestled
with 'faith,' asking myself how I could develop it. Augustine says,
"Love God, then do as you please." I have come to take this
as when one truly loves God, we develop a heart of submission, and that
submission leads to a lifestyle led more and more by the Spirit. We
begin to want God's will for his creation.
As I began seminary, the topic of faith continued to be in
the forefront. My professor clarified that Hollywood "faith"
is when Indiana Jones jumps off a cliff onto an invisible path that
leads him safely across to the other side.
