In addition to the Constitution of the EPC, the Session is guided by and confirms the “Position Paper on the Sanctity of Marriage,” adopted by the EPC 24th General Assembly, June 2004. This position paper is hereby incorporated by reference as though fully set forth herein. Accordingly, the Session adopts and confirms the long-standing belief and position of Bear Creek Church leadership and members that marriage is a holy institution, ordained by God from the beginning of time and is a commitment between one man and one woman, founded on the couple’s commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The purpose, sanctity, and depth of required commitment for marriage were emphasized by Jesus Christ who instructed that the man and woman who became one flesh are never supposed to divorce or commit adultery. Furthermore, the Session considers wedding services to be worship services before God, conducted in His honor, according to His Word. Bear Creek Church seeks to please God in these services, both for the joy of worshiping Him in celebration, and in order to be able to ask His blessing on the marriage. Therefore, any couple joined in the union of marriage at Bear Creek Church must be one man and one woman who have professed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
